A 1st trip for one of us, for the "African" of Egypt (which is on two continents), a 2nd for the other, our little expedition to Egypt has allowed us to replace more than 42 centuries of stereotypes, to understand the beauty and challenges of this great country.
In Egypt as in other countries, we must make choices and priorities of the season, especially for a stay of less than 15 days.
We chose CAIRO and surroundings, and Aswan, Abu Simbel and its environs. The days were filled correctly, so also visit Luxor and surroundings, the Red Sea, or the different oases in addition, have allowed to remain on the surface of things and spend their time in transfers (Which may be long).
We opted for late December or early January when the nights and mornings are cool (8-11 ° C), but when days are pleasant (18-28 ° C). Ideal for visiting the 2-3 selected points. Alexandria would be less favorable because of rain. Sharm el Sheik is slightly cool to the "bubbles" (all kinds).
The aircraft between Cairo and Aswan is clearly recommend (+ 950 km, 1h15 by plane, train with more than 10 hour trip is ideal for writing his memoirs, sleeping, or for small budgets on the road, it must be "thinking" ... In addition, some areas are restricted for foreigners).
Egyptair planes in domestic routes are essentially EMBRAER 170, fairly recent, and A320.
between Aswan and Abu Simbel (280 km), the aircraft is obviously faster (half hour flight, but registration deadlines), while a taxi or tour bus takes about 3 h. For the latter, there are convoys escorted by two days in each direction, with departures at a fixed time. We moving taxi, who take the right to exceed (and bus and speeds), we did not feel tight convoys of settlers crossing "valley" as in Western movies. A
interests of the aircraft is to better understand the economic geography: a green band only few miles wide along the waters of the Nile for hundreds of miles south of Cairo. Otherwise, the real desert.
Despite all the faults of the Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser, during the construction, filling (internally displaced people, historic sites submerged or moved at great cost) and operation (Evaporation of surface water from the lake, sinking progressive loss of "fertilizer" natural silt downstream, dry areas of the delta, etc..) however we understand their need: production electric power, flow control, irrigation, more regular and less random cultures, which allows two crops a year instead of one, water supply for people and activities.
For a population estimated at more than 82 million people, growing trend, ecology in the strict sense must be combined with two other pillars of sustainable development: economic and social / societal especially in a country depends in part on the outside.
As on other occasions, I could make a comparative study of 4 guides: The Rough Guide Egypt 2011, Lonely Planet, 2010. Lonely Planet 2008 (French edition, there are more recent) Blue Guide Hachette 2003. I had eliminated other.
The GDR is the most convenient for the single traveler: useful addresses, maps, rare but easily readable, clear weighting in there to see, to make choices. It is "lighter" elements in the context of the country visited.
The Lonely Planet , is also good in the practical part, in the best elements of context (culture, society), but the maps are more difficult to read, the font of the text smaller, and must read for all understand whether a site is first or third category, in terms of public access.
Clearly the two are equal overall
The Rough Guide, which is still better than many other collections, is nevertheless below. The "practice" remains less clear. Some fears about the updates. Example: Aswan, Elephantine Island hotel there is a good class, which has a sort of "control tower" moderately stylish (I've seen worse) and consistently criticized by the editors of all guides. Its sign is always Oberoi in LPF 2010, while LP 2008, was already Mövenpick.
The Blue Guide is very appropriate for this country's rich and complex culture, or in addition to a practical guide, or when one is in a group trip. Through dozens of inserts, flash, framing, topic pages, we understand and we are captive to what one sees
Memo: For travelers, the (good) lending libraries (municipal or otherwise) can be equipped with guides without buying them all.
Compared to other countries visited, it is features and benefits that can hold / buy directly, either in advance on the internet (including hotels, some routes), or on place (tickets, travel services).
Starting with some clear ideas already, I recommend however, even for independent travelers and seasoned of to compare with some travel agencies for some hotels, transfers, taxis long distances, unless fluent in a short time the art of negotiation Eastern, Mediterranean, that of evaluation reports money and measurement reliability for which little time and will not be disappointed.
Even though we have not suffered too much, tourism in Egypt is often
- mass tourism (see the size of cruise ships on the Nile)
- and where the tourist is (only) for some a wallet on legs with a limited ability to think (one of the specialties being "pigeon").
At Aswan for example, simply saying that we had paid such a sum in Cairo for a given product or service, made me 1 / progress in the estimated value of the caller and 2 / decline the market value of the coveted.
